Chicken pox and Hand Foot and Mouth disease

Tee’s school has been hit with a double whammy these last two weeks. To date, although I can’t be sure since I don’t hang around for the gossip, there have been three cases of hand, foot and mouth disease and five cases of chicken pox. Another three children were sent home today for suspected chicken pox/HFM.

The kids are screened every morning before they enter the classrooms through a hands and feet check for blisters of any sort, then they check the mouth before sending them to the washroom for a hand wash.

Tee has been vaccinated against chicken pox but that means nothing. Two of the kids who caught it were also vaccinated previously. What I’ve noticed though is that when they catch it at this age, it is very mild. A slight fever is expected and spots usually begin in the stomach area. Expect to stay out of school for three to four days only. That’s how soon the kids with chicken pox returned to school. When I had it at 17, I was out for TWO weeks!!! And I looked like the lumpy black monster from button city. Press me and you’d get a reaction. Peep. I have the scars to prove it.

Some moms have opted to pull their kids out of school for the time-being but I honestly don’t think it’s going to make much of a difference. It’s luck!

My only fear for Tee contracting any diseases is that I’d have to spend twenty four seven with her again. Oh no. That, I can live without. I already need to spend two whole months with her come November due to the school holidays.

TWO. WHOLE. MONTHS.

I’m not looking forward to the fireworks. And I need to stock up on some tequila.
