What to do when you have a smart kid

Contrary to what the Doctor said about keeping Tee challenged by learning a new language yet keeping her within her same age group, we have decided against it. We really don’t want to send her to a Chinese School.

I have always been the youngest amongst my peers throughout my school career despite being a March child because I had skipped 2 years. Back then, you could skip years. In my school anyway. I never really noticed any difference between myself and my peers. I knew they were older but it didn’t change anything. They were still all my friends. Academically, we were compatible. I beat them at some exams, they beat me in some. It was all very competitive but it was a healthy kind of competition. More importantly, I had a great time at school!! I took leads in school plays, I played competitive sport, I was very active in extra-curricular activities (including boys) and I still kept my grades up. I had good fun in school.

Perhaps one may say that this was when I’d already developed all my motor skills after Primary One whereas Tee is still 4.5 years old but I think it is all psychological. If the child is encouraged and explained why everyone else is older, she really should be fine. And I know Tee is mature enough to understand a lot of things. They can almost be brainwashed still. It’s the same as selling a concept to an adult. I can still brainwash many adults if there was a need, which is why I was always told I’d be a good lawyer.

I also feel that if work in school is so easy for Tee, then what? Well, she’d have to learn how to be resourceful for challenges. There is so much to learn in this world that you cannot possibly be bored! If you’re bored, you’re boring!!!
