When T1 hit one year old, I let her feed herself. It was only ONE child then. I let her make a mess every single day and happily cleaned up her mess. By the time she was almost two, she was a pro at feeding herself. Every time we were at public restaurants, she’d feed herself very well on a high chair and people always came up to commend her on how well she fed herself. They were surprised even that such a small thing was capable of feeding herself with very little mess. Bravo, T1!

T2, however, has not been given much opportunity at all to feed herself. Mommy is too lazy to clean mess!!! I would say she has been allowed to feed herself less than 50 times. And usually only with food that requires minimal cleaning. She also has this hot tempered personality whereby should her sister piss her off, she’d tip her bowl off the table in a huff. And Mommy would get completely ballistic.

It is a necessary skill to have though. The earlier you allow your child to feed herself, mess and all, the earlier and faster she’ll learn. *big sigh*
