For the last few months, Tee has increasingly spent her time playing pretend. And the roles she takes on is as far as her imagination takes her. I suspect that her drama class at school takes this practise further as she comes home talking to herself or to us about the most unimaginable things.
Last weekend, she came cycling into my bedroom saying she was a caterer. I have never used that word with her before and wondered if it came from school. To test if she understood the word, I asked her what she brought me to which she happily replied, some wanton and some pau. I was surprised as we even rarely eat wanton and pau, so she is definitely getting this story from somewhere. Then she asked me if I was going to pay her. I asked how her how much it cost and she said 400 dollars. WHAT?! That is too expensive! I can’t afford to eat this wanton and pau. Is it made of gold? She said, Okay, I will give you a discount. That will be 100 dollars. And before I could pay her, she straddled off to her next customer. Now, where did she learn about discounts??? (We are having parent-teacher chats this week as it is the last week of school so I will ask the teacher about wantons and paus).
A few weeks ago, Tee’s drama teacher said that Tee freaked out during drama class for some reason and then set off a few other kids to cry. They were in the assembly hall acting out the hunt for a monster searching for footprints everywhere and the teacher eventually became the monster (which I thought was quite dumb – these are three year olds, for goodness sake), so Tee got scared and started wailing. The drama teacher said that Tee was in school long enough to be familiar with her surroundings and playing the monster game was to teach them that there was no such thing as monsters. Hmmm……
The book, Harold and His Purple Crayon, has taught Tee that she can get anything she wants or dream anything her heart desires. This is a good thing because why should a hat be a hat? It could also be a boat, or a container or a frisbee. So we go through days with Tee throwing the Big Bad Wolf into the smelly dustbin or Tee making up funny stories until we are in stitches. She’s amazing, that kid.
I attended an early childhood education workshop which stressed that from the age of 0-6 years, children’s brains absorbed triple the amount of college students. At 1 year old, the unused brain stems fall off, then at 3 years, more fall off and at 6, even more fall off. After that, the kid’s genetic make up for brain development is practically formed. Anything learnt after that is learnt at the pace you and I learnt at school. Normal pace, within some parameters.
So if you wanted to develop your children’s full potential, to load her with as many experiences as possible, talk as much as possible to her in PROPER English (unless her school does that, importance lies in the fact that the kid has at least ONE area where PROPER English is spoken), and develop her imagination as far as possible by discussing books. Allow her to design her own endings. These three exercises are supposed to take your child as far as possible into the real world to be world class leaders, to converse as diplomats do. And then, the periphery of that, is to ensure they are taught good manners and have disciplined time-outs.

She believes that we can all have a life of our own desires to enable real contribution into the world. But first, one needs to understand what this all means.
