Who knows what the playground rules are in KL??? I ask because many a time, my kids are confronted with playground challenges. Today, T1 wanted to get onto a swing but the kids were hogging the swing like they owned it. She came to me to explain that she really wanted to go on the swings but didn’t have a chance. I told her she needed to wait there so they knew that she was waiting and wanted to get on.
She did that for 5 minutes and then came back to me to say that they were STILL on the swing. So I asked her to tell them that she would like to have a go when they were done. Meanwhile, I checked my watch and observed the situation. There was a Dad watching his daughter on the swing half the time and the other half on his iphone who pretended he didn’t know who his daughter was and didn’t want to get involved.
A further 5 minutes later, T1 came back to me again to complain that telling the girl that she wanted to have a go wasn’t working. I urged her to be patient and asked her to wait longer beside the swing and then told myself that I was going to give the girl, that girl, the hogging swing mini-minx, another 10 minutes before I barged to the swing and throw her at her Dad! I’m only kidding, of course. Some people are so serious, they’d readily report me to welfare.
But in exactly 10 minutes, the girl left with her Dad and T1 happily got on. Mind you, the girl was there forever before T1 even wanted to get onto the swing. She’d been there since we arrived at the playground and in that time, the kids had gone on the slides, the monkey bars and climbed the ant hill.
So what do you reckon is a fair time to play at a piece of playground equipment knowing very well someone or worse, a queue of people are waiting for it? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? What is the optimal time a child will derive playground pleasure on a particular piece of playground equipment? Or is it first come first served and I can hog this for an hour should I wish…..
Another thing that irks me at the playground and only because I have young children is when kids misuse the playground equipment by being creative. It is well and fine them being creative with the equipment but this shows my baby T2 the creative possibilities that she isn’t yet ready for! So do you think that kids should be climbing up slides the wrong way around when others want to slide down?
Should kids be doing stunts on the swings? I remember during my time, we’d sit on the swings and spin them till they could no longer spin, and then release!!! WheeeeEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
We’d also swing on the swings whilst standing on them – Eek! What are your views? Would you allow your kids to get creative at the playground?

there’s no rules apparently but the right upbringing by the parents. my kids dont stay long on the swing only coz they want to play other stuff. but they have yet to complain to me about not having a go. i guess if i do see them hogging a swing and there are other kids waiting, i would sound them to let others have a go. i have seen so many wild kids in playgrounds and their parents totally not bothered. i’ve told off some kids before and that also coz they were bullying mine. but mostly, i will tell mine to stay away from these bullies.
No No No. If want to be creative, go buy your own set of apparatus and put them in your house. The facility is public and meant for everyone to enjoy. Once creativity sets in (I’m refering to those dangerous sorts), there is only danger to the rest. I think 10-15mins is ok but what does a child know? Parents should be the one alerting the kid.
