It is a common misconception in Malaysia. For every stone that you throw here, you’d have a good chance in hitting a Datuk (a pretentious title wannabe akin to the Lords of England). These titles are given out by royalty in Malaysia to whomever they see fit. In Kota Bharu, there is a rumour that one was bought for RM400k but hey, hey……it is only a rumour that I heard.
In general, people with titles in Malaysia get away with better service. Trust me on this which I’ve personally witnessed many a time. They are regarded as the upper crust of society and have lots of money. Such ignorance……tsk, tsk.
Just because someone is a Datuk, it doesn’t mean he is wealthy. He could actually be in the red with lots of outstanding loans. He could have stupidly signed off as guarantor for many friends whom he thought were friends. He could have lost all his savings in a flash through some bad investments or be stabbed with a multi-million dollar divorce suit leaving him penniless.
Yet, just because he is a Datuk, people still assume he is rich and take advantage of him or want to be associated with him. He can’t rid himself of his title either without upsetting some. And even if he did, people already know him as a Datuk. That mindset is hard to twist.
Being a Datuk is not necessarily easy. Did you know that everytime the Sultan/Agong (ruler of State/Country) has a function or takes a flight somewhere, all the Datuks of that particular state would be summoned to attend in their very hot Datuk uniforms? This doesn’t always happen in air-conditioned venues either.
Obviously, the egotistical find it difficult to reject a Datukship offer………….so, you Datuks deserve any unpleasantries that come with being one! Blek!
