Although I’m nowhere close to calling myself a runner, I’ve actually learnt a lot about running and shoes this year, thanks to Godpa Soorya.
The first thing I learnt was that my Mizunos were too tight for running! They certainly don’t tell you these things at the shops! Only at the more professional shops…….otherwise, most of the sales staff where you buy running shoes are just there to…….err……..get the shoe sizes you request for and then transact the sale.
However, in order for a running shoe to fit perfectly, you need to be able to press at least half an inch from your big toe for a gap of space for expansion. Then the width of the shoes have to fit the broadness of your feet comfortably too. Most Nike shoes are too narrow for my broad feet! Then of course, it depends on what kind of arch you have on your feet and finally, whether the shoe is super comfortable all round. Can you run comfortably in it without it slipping and sliding in any way? Sometimes it fits in front but the ankle bits are too loose and vice versa. You just need to try on several brands to get that perfect fit.
For example, my last pair purchased earlier this year were from Brookes. I tried every running shoe there was from New Balance but none were as comfy as those particular ones from Brookes.
Also, the foam under the shoes deteriorate within a year so if you are buying a shoe for added cushioning, never buy old stock because the foam in it is already dead. I can vouch that my 3 year old Mizunos, although hardly ever used and still as good as new, have no longer got a bounce in them and you can feel a remarkable difference when trying out several shoes comparatively. Whenever I buy shoes now, I always ask when the shoes came in, exactly which month, and although the latest models have the most expensive price tag, there is obviously a reason for this.
However, if you don’t have feet problems, nor knee or back problems, then any cheap shoe will do!
Interestingly, AFTER I purchased the above Nikes, the sales girl told me I could connect my ipod/iphone etc to the shoe to electronically calculate each run I do. Huh? The Hubs immediately asked, “I hope you didn’t pay that price just for that!” Of course, not. I didn’t even know about that feature and I wouldn’t have a clue how to go about it anyway……
