When I was working at the Petronas Twin Towers, it was in my contract that I couldn’t join a client to work for at least 12 months after I left the said company and likewise in our client’s contract with us, they couldn’t poach our staff for a whole 12 months after they left our premises too (we leased office space). So what did I do?

This particular British guy was so impressed with me because I got him to pay me a RM180,000 deposit within 2 days. My selling and convincing skills were so hot that he decided to make me an offer I couldn’t refuse. The only drawbacks were that I’d have to work from his house – for a whole 12 months. Because he was already paying so much money at the twin towers as rent, he couldn’t afford another office outside for me. Working from his house would be free for him. Besides, me working with him at the towers would bring us trouble since we were both in breach of our respective contracts. Plus he got to see me everyday at home.
As an employee, I got to enter this bloke’s private life by working from his home. His maid cooked me lunch and his wife kept me company. I knew his underwear size, I knew his most intimate details (from his wife 🙂 ), I watched him fly RC airplanes (remote controlled airplanes), I watched him fight with his wife, I knew their favourite TV channels, I knew how their maid felt about them, I met their extended family whenever they came down for holiday, I helped them move house……..it was almost like working for a friend without limitations.
Alas, I couldn’t heck it and left after 2 months. Nothing is more lonely than working daily in a solitary room surrounded by four white walls, even with sunlight and a beautiful view. I knew then that I could never work from home as I am the type who needs real-life adult interaction (hence my going mental right now).
My Boss was ever so kind and even apologised for having put me up to this deal as I had to give up a well-paid fulfilling and respectable job.
Heh. No regrets!
