My affinity to Italy

Today I brought my 2 girls to swim at one of the 5 star hotels in town because my childhood Italian friend is in town. Yesterday, I spent a few hours with her without the kids after not seeing her since my wedding as one of my bridesmaids. This is the same girl who meant as much to me as the girl I lost to lupus, both Italian, both dated the same guy. It is all fated.

Elena reminded me how we met today. I was living in Leeds with my half Italian boyfriend then, one I was destined to marry on Montorfano, and Elena was a new housemate. My friend, Sam, had just passed 2 days ago and I was devastated. As soon as Sam died, I met Elena. Elena says she felt a presence in my bedroom on the top floor in Leeds that first day that we met. She believes it was Sam. We believe that Sam brought Elena into my life and into Sam’s ex-boyfriend’s life so Elena could take care of him. And coincidentally, years later, Elena moved to Malaysia to work as a designer too (just as Sam was a designer like me) and started dating Sam’s ex. Isn’t is so weird???? Coincidence much???

What’s with all these Italians in my life???

I had the most beautiful experience in Italy though when I visited previously. The cobble stoned roads, the raw timber ceiling beams, snowy mountains, beautiful lakes, hot teas, pasta and more pasta, various raw meats, family, family and family. Sam was my first taste of Italy. She spoke of Torino (Turin) with passion. It was where her Mama was from, owner of Missoni in Singapore then and who knows, probably still now if she isn’t retired. I will always remember her because she gave me Sam’s scarf, her Ralph Laurent handbag and GBP1,000. That was a lot of money then for a student. I had the privilege too to spend the night at her home in London several times overlooking the Thames and also spent the night with her housekeeper at her home in London because Sam loved her so. How I miss that girl……..and Elena brought back a flood gate of sweet memories.

I have my own story with Elena too. I used to mentor her in design and she went on to become a big famous Italian designer who made big bucks in Hong Kong and Dubai. Amazing! I will always remember the night my drinks got spiked at L’Equippe in London and I was so, so, so, so sick that Elena panicked. I vaguely remember her running cold running tap water on my wrists, and I was vomiting everywhere, the club floor, the toilets, the London cab, the roads…..man, I have never been that sick from a sip from alcohol ever. I am so sure my drink was spiked and thank goodness, I had Elena to care for me. She brought me home and I was so sick that I didn’t even care about anything. Oh my, never again. It is incredible how this web of Italians and this guy were all associated in my past life. And it is so nice that when we meet again after years of not seeing each other that nothing has changed. We just pick up wherever we left off and the trust and the genuine friendship is still always there.

Elena got me excited today about Italy, so I guess we will be heading that way soon!!!! She told me the most marvellous stories of her country!!!
