Whilst on our KL City Tour Walk, we visited the Malaysia’s Textile Museum near Dataran Merdeka, the orange and white striped building? Bet you didn’t even know one existed! Well, it opened this year in April so you’re forgiven…..

The building is very cold in temperature and very dark. Perhaps fabric is better appreciated in the dark??

The museum spans 2 floors and over quite a wide area but I reckon 2 hours is sufficient to cover the whole place. I didn’t manage to do that as it was nearing lunch time and I had whiny kids so I was quite stressed and people wanted to use the toilet etc etc etc.

However, from what little I saw, it was worth going (entry is free) and I’ve not captured even a fraction of what is displayed there as they had historical jewellery from all over Malaysia, including metal belts and traditional Malay huge gold crafted bangles and all sorts of jewellery.

There were displays of how all sorts of Malaysian fabric were made, not just batik and songket but even the traditional Iban weaving fabric and the Sarawakian fabrics and fabrics made from jut……

They also showed various ways of how prints were done and how colours were obtained from natural products such as ginger and turmeric.

And from all that tradition, they had a super modern lift within the building. I’m really not sure why this lift was necessary as it was only a two storey building and if it were to assist the old and disabled, was such a pretty, high tech lift necessary? Honestly, this isn’t to negate the importance of the old and disabled at all but since it opened, how many people really in wheel chairs have used that lift? And how many old people with knee problems have used the lift? How many old people who were above a certain age were so frail that they could no longer walk have used the lift? And how much money was spent on it? It’s all check and balance, isn’t it? Who paid for it?

When we were there, there was one other foreign tourist couple in that entire museum. In the whole time we were there, they were the only other human (I’m sure there were a lot of spirits!) beings there apart from the odd cleaner or two.

Majority of us, could use this very comfortable staircase. It’s ONE FLOOR for goodness sake!!!
