Learning Similes

What the hell are similes, you may ask, especially if you are not an English Teacher? Well, I had no clue. A simile is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things with similar properties, for example, I am as busy as a bee, T2 is as cool as a cucumber, the Hubs is as wise as an owl and T1 is as modest as a maiden. Not.

Ahhhhh.…..I hear you.

She needs to learn only 15 similes at school this term although there are lots more, and on top of all the crazy other things she needs to learn for her mid term exam coming up, her brain is almost near fried. Poor thing.

I really don’t want to push her to learn them but I asked her yesterday to draw out all the 15 similes she has learnt at school because T1 is a visual learner. That, I know.

When T1 was less than 2 years old, we kept teaching her the colours by pointing coloured objects to her and saying its name but for the longest time, she never got it! I was thinking perhaps she was dyslexic or something but finally, I had the idea to let her paint cardboard shapes in various primary and secondary colours, and I swear to you, within that 2 days, she knew all her colours.

How amazing is that?

A haphazard sketch of her similes on recycled paper that we found around the house. The similes she needs to know are: As dry as a bone, As blind as a bat, as wise as an owl, as slow as a tortoise, as strong as an ox, as cunning as a fox, as graceful as a swan, as alike as two peas, as smooth as glass, as slimy as an eel, as quiet as a mouse, as quick as lightning, as sweet as honey, as fierce as a lion, as old as the hills, and as cold as ice.

Alright, I’ve got that covered. And the purpose of this post is so I can test T1 as and when I’m free, when we’re out and about, so I can easily pull out this list from my faithful old Blackberry. Because no way can I remember such an exhaustive list!
