Inspiring your child to love the piano

I started playing the piano when I was 6 – pretty late now if you compared it with the ages kids are now beginning their musical journeys! I hated it at 6 and by 7, I was begging my mom to stop my piano lessons which she almost did. However my piano teacher then, a Ms Alice, advised my mom that I had talent and not to stop just yet. I am very glad today that I was encouraged to get over that first hurdle and enjoyed the piano tremendously subsequently up till today. My brother though was allowed to stop his piano lessons…..bwahaha……

T1 started piano lessons proper at the age of 6 (or just before? despite suggestions that her fingers might be too small) and now at almost 8, she is still loving the piano but dislikes practising when I tell her to. If I don’t tell her to practise, she would very happily take on the piano herself to practise. What’s up with kids these days!

Recently, she’s been invited to play for an important event and she has been moaning about how tough it is as it is an adult’s piece so she thinks that only adults can play it but that’s hogwash. I told her it’s like reading……she used to complain that the words were too small in some books so that scared her. But now she realises that if you can read, you can read. It doesn’t matter how big or small the words are or how thick a book is, if you can read, you can read.

It’s the same for the piano. Once you can read the notes, you can play almost anything. Of course, if a child’s fingers are too small for certain chords, then the chords may need to be adjusted accordingly. So how did I convince T1 to practise for this what she considers a very difficult piece? Seriously, it isn’t difficult…….she’s just dramatizing.

I showed her videos of those child prodigy pianists on youtube and showed her how despite how tiny those 5 year old fingers were, they were still playing some amazing music. That did it for my girl. She’s so competitive that she cannot lose. She immediately went to the piano and practised hard with full determination and I have every confidence that she is going to wow a crowd of people. Watch this space.
