Many yonks ago, my mother had a florist and during Raya and Chinese New Year, orders were in abundance so much that the entire family clan had to be involved in delivering fruit baskets, flowers, gifts and hampers to lucky people all over the Klang Valley. During this boom time of at most a week, she could make as much cash as RM30,000 NETT!
For this reason, she keeps encouraging me to start a business in this line but to work only during the festive seasons. The overheads and costs are low and the margins are high but as much as I love the dollar signs, the sheer amount of work involved puts me off the idea completely. I vividly remember following my aunty ALL DAY in the scorching heat delivering flowers and hamper baskets from dusk till dawn. Actually it was more like 10am to 10pm. It was exhausting! My dad and uncles would be delivering to other locations and my Mom will be at the store busy arranging the fastest gifts of her life. But she’s talented that way so it was probably easy to her.
As for me, I’d much rather purchase my own custom gift basket as they are not at all expensive, look gorgeous and will touch someone’s heart without tearing a hole in your wallet. In fact, they are great value for money for looking so beautiful! If anyone was looking to give that type of gift, I would also direct them that way because no way I am going to decorating any more gift baskets! I’m done with that now.
