Many people have commented that my first daughter, T1, is very smart. I’m not sure by what measure they come to their conclusions but at the risk of sounding like a brag, I too sometimes acknowledge that she is of above average intelligence. This is of course, MY biased view although T1 seems to think she’s quite smart too and if she isn’t careful, her head might get stuck between the doors one day and I don’t know how far the Malaysian Bomba can help her. But now that I’ve gotten to know T2 for more than a year, I can almost say that T2 will be even more intelligent. Not that it’s a competition or anything, nor does it matter, since every person has their own unique qualities, both good and bad.

Judging purely on pencil holding.

Now I was told by a former teacher that it was important for children to learn how to hold their pencils correctly. They usually start out by gripping it as though you grip your steering wheel, but later, they need to be taught how to hold one correctly. If not, cursive writing (which they will be required to do) will not come naturally, and then a whole new hurdle will need to be crossed again.

My T1. She’s six, and despite countless reminders, is unable to shirk her bad habit of holding a pencil wrongly. She can sure write perfectly in the way she holds her pencil, it’s just not the correct method. I really don’t know if it is too late now to change this habit but I sure have more pressing matters to worry about!

My T2 however, is merely a baby, and she is a natural when it comes to holding a pencil!!!

She has never held a pencil using the steering wheel grip, which is so unusual because almost all babies do that. This baby, she LOVES being read to and reading (she points and babbles) and she LOVES drawing. She’s also a thinker. An observer. A real intellectual.

And when things don’t go her way, she yells and commands, stomps her feet and bangs her palms; and scrunches up her little nose.

She is so cute.
