Happy Birthday, Uncle Ben!

A couple of weeks ago, my brother Ben, turned 34. I think? My brother Ben is the most amazing brother, uncle, son and in future, husband anyone could ever wish for. Really. And the girl who will eventually steal his heart will be as lucky to have a lifetime of joy. And fun. And romance. And perhaps an inheritance……ok, I’m stretching it now.

For his birthday, we got him a Haagen Daz ice cream cake so WE could eat it. Yay! We had celebrated his birthday out but because we were so full that night, saved the ice cream cake for another day.

Tee loves her Uncle Ben more than anything. He is her official escort for all the shows and movies that she attends, with the most recent being Giraffes Can’t Dance (which she loved).

He coached her to straight A’s in her last Term 1 exams. OK, truth be told, I’m not sure how much actual learning was done because it sure as hell sounded like more PLAYING. And screaming amidst squeals of laughter. But hey, she’s a kid! And playing is the BEST way to get a kid to LEARN. Hello? Kiasu parents? Wake up….Whilst I’m on that, Tee achieved 96% for English and Science, 98% for Mathematics and 100% for Bahasa (SHOCKING). The standard of English is quite high in her school and I knew it would be her weakest subject and it was. Anyway, I owe Uncle Ben for that ‘play’ session because there is just no way I have the patience to teach her anything. Well, anything academic…….How come they don’t grade her for swimming, art, social skills, manners, physical development etc etc etc. You know? All the OTHER things that are IMPORTANT? Because it’s a Malaysian school.

Because Tee loves Uncle Ben SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much, she MADE this present for him entirely on her own, without any supervision whatsoever and all I did was find her a jar and said yes, she could borrow my lipstick. She did all this whilst I was asleep. And I actually cried when I saw the finished product. OK, I didn’t cry….but I certainly felt my heart melt.

She asked me for an empty bottle one day when I was boobing T2 in bed so I asked what it was for. She said she needed to make Uncle Ben a present. I asked if a pasta bottle or a jam jar would do, then told her that I’d get it once T2 was done. Rushed out, found her an empty old jam jar and told her not to make a mess. Warned her 100 times as we do not have a maid now to clean up. This is her painted jam jar.

In it, were cut out pieces of cardboard with her lip prints on it. THAT was what my lipstick was for……..

And then, a note which she wrote entirely herself which said, “This jar is not just a jar. It has kisses but you just can’t see them. If you feel like a kiss from me, just open the jar.” Her spelling was all correct so I was mighty impressed, although her writing was a bit cacat. But great effort!!!

Now, tell me if that’s the kind of present you would like to receive? What’s the most touching present you’ve ever received or given? Come on, tell me. I’ll go have a think about it and will post mine next.

  1. Oh my, T1 has definitely got a creative streak…..from her mummy, perhaps?? I would have melted had I received such a gift. I’d received a bottle full of those hand-made stars….you know, those you fold using a long strip of paper and then you need to crimp the edges to form a star?
P/S: If I wasn’t married with 3 kids, I would be at your door step pronto – begging you to introduce me with Uncle Ben!!!

  2. cacat writing? U.. very high standard hor.

really perfect writing for a kid her age. Or my age, actually. Yea..she writes better than me.
