Ever since my MIL returned from a holiday in China, she’d been harping on and on about how dirty the way they prepared food was, how they put dogs into cans, how they used infinite amounts of chemicals in anything that can earn them an extra buck, how they fed steroids to pigs and fruit…..etc.
So………..we’re more than a little aware.
Last year, when I did my research on Baby Formula for a writing job, I also discovered that Baby Formula from China was suspect and made a note to myself that if I ever brought Tee there, to bring truckloads of formula for her safe consumption.
What about toys? Everything (well almost) is made in China.
I was even told by my friends there that construction time in China is three times as fast as here; simply because they are so poor and desperate. Quality? Just as good.
For the longest time, people were capitalising on China being the next big thing and everyone wanted to learn Mandarin. Whilst I believe that learning languages is useful, I wasn’t about to bend backward about sending Tee to a Chinese school. I don’t know Mandarin and I’ve coped just fine. In fact, I’d much rather her know French than Mandarin. OK, people condemn me that I don’t speak Mandarin so I pretend to be embarrassed about it. But really…..is knowing the language going to make me the next billionaire? I learnt French and Italian at University but my Mandarin stopped at the age of ten. The interest just wasn’t there.
We now try avoiding things from China that are potentially detrimental to our health as yummy as it may be. Today I read that the previous FDA hot shot in China is being hung for corruption.
Well, I’ll be damned.
