Detoxify yourself from Toxic People

We all know one, or two or three, or God forbid, more than that! I have certainly had my fair share of toxicity and it is all fine and dandy when they are just people around you that you can easily dump, but what happens when they are members of your family that you will undoubtedly see at least one or twice or thrice a year??? URGH!!!

Some family members of mine, and I shall not name them, but rest assured it isn’t anyone in my immediate family (i.e. Nana, Tok-Tok, Unka Ben, my brother down south and my entire in-laws; well, I just had to qualify that, you know….in case some people get sensitive – LOL!), have some serious issues with life. Life to them is a constant uphill battle that they are always climbing and they hate everyone else for it because they struggle to climb this mountain called life! So everything that comes out of their mouths is toxic, negative, designed to make you feel inferior and intended to pull you down. Although I am perfectly fine dealing with such people, I don’t like them around my children as kids pick up upon their surroundings and such negativity is totally unnecessary.

In the past, these kind of people might hurt me but now, I am equipped with some spicy bullets. I just don’t care anymore. I would kill them if I could but my Mom always says, just be respectful and be nice. And then stay out of their way as much as possible.

Mean people will always say things to bring you down because they are either jealous or tremendously insecure. It makes them feel better about themselves by pointing out your shortcomings or your mistakes in bringing up your kids. Or choice of husband, or home, or anything they can put their finger on, really! And then there are the ones who are so full of self-pity, continuous self-pity…..completely victimised, oh Lord!

So what do you do when you have some relative who keeps telling you should do this and that, or throws remarks that nobody in the world cares about them because of ABCDE?

You can defend your position by smiling sweetly and saying:-

“I can understand how you feel that way but I have decided to do it this way.”

“Thank you, I have already decided.”

“I realise it may not work for everyone but it works for me.”

“Thank you, I’ll consider it.” (then consider it for 0.001 seconds)

“Why do you ask?” (when they are being nosy)

Don’t volunteer any details. It is none of their business. You can also change the subject and completely ignore the subject, just pretend you’re dumb and the best solution of all, do it with humour. That way, they never know if you’re being serious or not. Hick! I love being bitchy. Especially when it comes to horrid people!!!

In fact, I was told by one relative that another relative had so many bad things to say about me. I just smiled and changed the subject. I didn’t even care what people had to say, especially when it was coming from THAT kind of people, so I didn’t ask her what they said. Honestly, who cares…..my Mama always told me, as long as your conscience is clear, nothing else matters. Another thing she taught me was, as long as they weren’t paying my bills and putting food on my table, they weren’t entitled to pulling my strings.

  1. well said mamapumpkin! we need reminders like this…and to answer vonvon above, the same can be applied to them too. the key is to remain calm and don’t it get to you. i know easier said than done coz i’m still learning but we have to remind ourselves than there’s more important things in life than to worry about what other toxic ppl have said about us.

  2. negativity is not good for anyone, you’ll find that negative people have less energy and less success than usual. I always make an effort to surround myself with positive people all the time!
