That would be us females. Except that I would categorise myself not a typical female but one who is equally right and left brained. This has been tested and verified, just in case you were wondering.

I’ve noticed that whenever I’m in a group of women, I am usually the silent one. This is not a good thing as it welcomes speculation of sorts (another typically female trait). The strong silent types are the ones to watch out for, the dangerous ones. Or she is very insecure and shy, that’s why she’s as quiet as a mouse. Worse, what a snob. She is ignoring us.

The speculative reasons for one’s silence can go on and on, and usually does with people who have not seen the world. For them, the thoughts are cocooned in a little glass bowl and it is usually 1 + 2 = 3, black + white = gray. But the world really has more to offer and should they allow themselves to practise the power of thought, new perspectives are formed.

I get comments from people to say that I make them feel small from my silence or lack of words. But nobody can make you feel anything you don’t want to feel! Okay, let me take a few steps back. It is a stage of life, maturity, broadness of mind and aptitude; in keying in to what this world is all about. Easier said than done, I’ll admit, as I see everyone around me struggle with this concept. But surely, you deserve more to this life than to allow someone unworthy to ruin it! Practise makes perfect. Keep practising.

Let us spin the table around in speculating on the strong, silent types. Perhaps I have nothing to add to the conversation. If you’re talking about the latest hip-hop hit and I know nothing about it, why should I say something for the sake of saying something? Perhaps I am pre-occupied and have a lot on my mind so I am not even listening. Perhaps I am a private person believing less is more. Perhaps I really AM shy and insecure! And seriously, if you are talking about something in which I have absolutely no interest in, I’ll be up front in telling you that I find it difficult to pretend that I am interested. I just don’t do that.

I have great friends of both the silent and noisy. And I love both types dearly. Because really, it is their hearts that matter most to me. Not their personalities, characteristics, how they look, who they know or how much money they have. Many of them irritate the shit out of me but I know them well enough to tell them to shut up. And even if it isn’t worth telling, I still cherish people with golden hearts. Genuine ones. Not the ones that can sway as and when they want something from you, or know they will want something from you in the future. I smell those a mile away.
