Me and my research habits

Whenever I am about to make a purchase, I usually burn the midnight oil for days on end researching the lucky product before parting with my hard earned cash. I’d draw up spreadsheets to analyse at a glance where my value was. In detail.

Like Tee’s school, for example. I’d visited 15 schools in my area before shortlisting 3 for the Hubs to make the final decision. He is the main bread winner after all.

I like my consumer rights. I like knowing I’ve got the best deal.

So when we needed to shop for a loan for our mortgage years ago, I’d called in every single banker in town to pay me a visit at my office. RHB, Maybank, AM, ABB, HSBC, Citibank, UOB, HLB, BCBB, EBB, OCBC, PBB, SBB and SCB.

Yes, I am THAT anal.

All we were looking for was some cheap mortgages yet one that was offered with personalised service and the best deal overall. Naturally.

But you have no idea how much influence and impact a sales person could make on you and if only banks knew that. At the end of the day, their interest rates weren’t far off so it was really the approach, attitude, friendliness and how much that person was willing to bend over backward for me that clinched the deal.

HLB didn’t want to come see me. They wanted me to burden myself to their branch. Like hello? Did they think I was a cat with all the time in the world? When I threatened to burn their building down, they eventually sent 2 young cikus to entertain me. They were young, inexperienced and could not answer my questions to save their lives. AND they were arrogant. Needless to say, their attitude made me aim their scrunched up forms into the corner dustbin.

Citibank offered the best service by far. Their representative came when called. Emailed when asked. Called when they said they would. Professionalism above the rest. Unfortunately, their rates were high. They did try very hard to win my business and I would recommend them to anyone.

SCB was okay. Professional enough but slightly arrogant too.

And then the rest were the in-betweens. Typical run-of-the-mill of what you’d expect from any Malaysian bank kind of service. Quite appaling.

I ended up going with UOB because they not only had the cheapest mortgage, they made me their best deal and service was good enough. Just because they did that one sale with us for a mortgage, we’d gone back with another two and had our credit cards with them as well. And BOY are they making money from us. I don’t mind. They deserved our business.

I always wonder what it would have been like had I gone through this same experience in London. What is the level of customer service in London?

But open your eyes and take time to understand it intellectually, remove your hang-ups, confirm your research, and you may just want to seize an opportunity. She did. And no, she never went about chasing people for sales. She had a sophisticated system work for her through technology and a smartphone.

She now impacts lives authentically with proven strategies amassed through the last decade of her own transformation offering online coaching programmes and always supports the underprivileged. She believes that we can all have a life of our own desires to enable real contribution into the world. But first, one needs to understand what this all means.

  1. Being a busy lady you are, I was wondering where the heck on earth did you find the time to entertain those banker nerds and yet making a thorough analysis of their shits.

Bankers, they are all the same, most of them if not all, will come up with fantastic marketing devices or plans to milk we poor sloggers to our last cent.

Read the fine prints carefully, I was once taken a ride by UOB in their so called ‘free for life’ credit card scheme which had its conditions in fine prints and wasn’t made known to me by the marketing agent. Pissed off as I was, I surrendered my cards to them the moment I came to know those ‘conditions’.

You’d better be careful and don’t around shouting to the whole world that you’ve a good deal lest you’ll find yourself burrowing the ground to hide your face and head.

  2. Our credit and debits cards (Amex and Diners)are free of annual fees. The only hassle is too call them every year when the bill comes to get them to waive it. Diners Club is good because they give me free access to the Airport Lounges in the ME. No annual fees and free access to the lounge… why not? Amex is loyatly to the co. from the US days but with the change in management to Maybank…. One wrong move and I will drop them….the free gifts you get from them is just a little bonus but i noticed the choices are not so great these days….
