I spent more than an hour at the bank today and finally got to see the insides of a ‘Premier’ bank. Have you ever wondered why there was a difference? What is Premier Banking?

Once, I followed a friend into a bank and it was the quickest, swiftest bank visit ever. I asked him – what do you have to do to become a premier banking customer? “Oh, you just need to have an ongoing balance of RM300,000.”

It was then that I’d realised that I’d never be able to get brown-nosed as a premier banking customer. Not in this lifetime.

But what happened today?

For the last week, I have been working on getting myself a foreign currency savings account. US Dollars to be exact (although who the heck wants US dollars these days? Look at the Aussie dollar! My mother just got back A$900 for offering RM3k+). And the complicated part is, I want it to be a Singaporean account.

Why?

So I can have total control over my newfound PayPal dollars. So I can transfer my PayPal dollars into my Singaporean bank account. So I can actually see, feel and smell the money that I can withdraw from my Singaporean account. Right here in Malaysia.

And the beauty of it?

I don’t have to travel to Singapore to open this account as long as I’ve been a longstanding customer of that particular bank. And I pay them a processing fee of Pound Sterling Fifty!!! For doing what?????? Oh…..for saving me that trip to Singapore.

Opportunists.

So the first time I went there last week, I hadn’t brought along my passport. Today, I brought along a copy but not the original passport. After some pleading of please don’t make me come back again or I will send your bank into a thundering Exorcist stage set, they shoved me down the red carpet into the secret world of Premier Banking……

Ooooooooohhhhhhhhhh……….so THIS is what it is……………..

There was an internet station for you to surf. A cheap lounge set with a TV showing CNBC. They used Bristol furniture in the ‘private’ rooms. Bristol!!! (Bristol is one of the cheapest office furniture you can get locally, next to Ikea – if you’re looking for real quality, you don’t go to Bristol). I thought it was an insult to the ‘real’ million dollar customers! If they really wanted to separate the people who had money and them who didn’t, then go all out and make it a real distinction for goodness sake. For your information, the Relationship Manager, who couldn’t even speak proper Engrish, didn’t form much a ‘Relationship’ with me. I thought it was her job? But nevermind.

After more than an hour spent, eating into my brunch time, I was finally told that I would need to COME BACK! once the account is opened, and then TT the funds directly into my newfound account MYSELF.

It was obvious that they had never done such a service before from their lack of familiarity about the processes involved. So much for the 50 pounds! And if this is what Premier Banking is about, the real millionaires out there?

They’re getting shortchanged.

As far as I know, if you are a Premier Banker, you are almost guaranteed a parking spot right outside the bank. You get lovely looking Chinese New Year Ang Pows. You get prompt attention from ze Relationship Managers who don’t speak proper Engrish. What else? Anyone?
