The life of a Model – A whole different world

My aunt (Mother’s sister) used to be a model. Model of the Year 1982. Now, she chorerographs fashion shows. We (as in me and her) are doing a show this month for some local Royalty and because I am my aunt’s assistant, I am in charge of the administration (which I can do with both eyes close) but still gives me something else to do to earn some spare cash besides getting to hang out with Malaysian models. I am inclined to say *yawn* but I shan’t judge. Only that my previous experiences with models have shown that they come from a completely different planet.

The last time I went on a show out of town, the taxi van driver who took us to the airport couldn’t stop staring at his rear view mirror, eyes gleaming like you know, when you are about to dive in to get something you really want. He managed to turn into the wrong road a few times and even entered the wrong toll gate where it clearly said NO ENTRY. Ham sap man (pervert). I suppose it is not everyday he gets 10 beautiful girls sat at the back of his van, so oggle he did. I scolded him to pay attention to his driving and half wondered if he had a boner. Gross….

Models……we have nothing in common. They talk about clothes, make-up, shoes. They giggle about people and exchange stories of events. Someone once told me that if I have nothing nice to say, I should just shut up. And if I have to talk, to talk about ideas first, followed by events and then lastly about people. I try to stick by that rule.

A large chunk of a model’s income goes into designer bags and shoes. The lucky ones have men to indulge them. And then there is the 1% of them who are just doing it for the sake of doing it. For experience, just because they can and want to, for whatever reason.

So whilst typing out their IC numbers today for entry into the Istana and for air ticket purchases, I made an observation that they were all in their early to mid 20s and interestingly all born in either February, May or October. ALL. Isn’t that interesting??? I wondered if it had something to do with the zodiac signs that spurred some personalities into the world of fashion.

Models earn about RM300-500 per show, very rarely more, depending how popular they are. Doing a show involves getting to the venue early, getting dolled up and learning the costume sequence. Practising the steps on the catwalk, and then a lot of waiting. To earn extra income, models hope for advertisements and commercials, plus events where their presence are paid for or from endorcement of products. Being a model in Malaysia is far from being a supermodel in New York City.

Models are always wearing skin coloured underwear (G-strings and strapless bras), they bring lots of safety pins and hair pins, some tape (for sticking clothes to the body or whatever), a whole bag of make up, heels that have been specified, camera (they’re always snapping themselves just before a show after they’re all dressed to kill), a bottle of water and snacks.

So come next week, I’ll be travelling again with a troup of models who are all double my height and half my weight. We become the object of stares everywhere we walk, and I again feel like their bag carrier.

I. need. to. lose. weight.

And no, she never went about chasing people for sales. She had a sophisticated system work for her through technology and a smartphone.

She believes that we can all have a life of our own desires to enable real contribution into the world. But first, one needs to understand what this all means.
