A rough pregnant day of words

I cannot stress how horrible yesterday was for me. My body just felt like it was about to tear apart. I tried having an afternoon nap with Tee around and usually she is very good if I turn the TV on or if she is focused on playing with something, like her doll house. She was incredibly good those first four months when I was puking profusely!

But yesterday, although the TV was on and I tried to have a nap, she kept running in to ask me a question every 15 minutes. And although I ignored her many times and told her to save her questions, she’d still run into my bedroom to start her question, then remembered that she was supposed to save it, then run out. It drove me completely nuts!

She is constantly asking questions these days. The Hubs and I cannot get past a decent conversation without being interrupted at least 10 times for every 100 sentences we speak.

Here are some of the type of words she asks : “what is…..???”

TERMINAL, FAMINE, STATUS, FEEBLE, RESULT, DISCARD, SUCCESS, POTENTIAL, HYGIENE…..etc etc etc, and mind you, we really have to stop and think of how to explain these words to her. It isn’t easy! Some of her books introduce big words to her too and again, we are bombarded with difficult questions.

Having said that, her vocabulary has also increased tremendously ever since she’s been on this word inhalation exercise. She recently used the word TERRITORY and CONTRAPTION correctly in a sentence, which tells me that things are entering her little brain. I don’t think this is normal for a 4.5 year old. I certainly don’t remember using such big words when I was that age and don’t hear many other kids using such words either.

Tee has this book called The Boy Who Loved Words ( I think that’s what it’s called, something about a boy who collected words as his hobby) and I wonder if it is this influence that spurs her to ask of every single word she does not comprehend, yet she says her teacher at school tells her that it is very important to ask about every single thing you don’t understand *faint* because it will make her smarter.

She is clearly on a word rampage.

Last night, at 4am, I had gone again to have a pee and when I returned to bed, there was Tee, all wide eyed, and before I knew it, she was asking me what the meaning of APPETITE was. In the midst of my slumber, I had to make that split second decision whether to comply, be a nice Mom, and answer her, or…….basically tell her to stuff it.

So I whispered to her, “APPETITE means how well you eat. If you eat well, you have a good appetite. If you don’t like food or if you’re sick, you have a bad appetite. Now go to sleep.”

Then she started telling me the story of Winnie the Pooh and how he had always had a good appetite when it came to honey and then one day blablablablabla, he had lost his appetite, blablablablabla, and Eeyore and Piglet blablablablabla……..FARK!!! I was starting to get a headache. Definitely too much TV. At 4am, the end of my tether was very near very fast.

“Tee, pleeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzze go to sleep NOW. We’ll talk tomorrow!” Mama scolded sternly.

And so she shut her trap. But her eyes were still wide open and her hands were playing around in the still darkness of night.

The next day, she arrived at school at 11am.
