My little electrical technician

A few months ago, T1 attended a half day electrical workshop where she learnt how to build a solar lamp from scratch. Man, even I don’t know how you did that! But I learnt along with her. Fascinating stuff. Her solar lamp is now placed at our lanai and still works till today. It absorbs energy from the sun during the day and at night, whenever we come home and it’s all dark, her solar lamp shines. Awesome stuff.

Her next project was to build a torch and to be creative as possible. Because I am super busy, I had no time to help but bless the girl, she is so independent that she could read and follow instructions and did it herself. We bought a tool box filled with soldering iron, solder, pliers, a T-Rex stripper, a soldering plunger and I cannot remember what else.

She came up with a cool idea and I completely supported her for her project idea which was to design a cheer-leading pom-pom that lights up. She even showed me her zany cheer-leading dance move and ended with the pretend torch pom-pom. Cool, right?

The electrician at work with fresh cherries for snack. Tsk-Tsk.

So she proceeded to build the torch herself and completed it within half an hour. So proud of her. The casing for the torch however required more thought so I had to step in. Although she knew in theory what materials she wanted to use, constructing it was another thing altogether. I’m sure she could have done something out of it but whether it was the best way to make the torch last etc begs to be questioned.

We decided to use an old mineral water bottle and raffia string and some old toilet roll holders. However, we have now reached a hurdle. We need a single hole puncher that can punch the mineral water bottle all the way into the middle and a single hole puncher that can do that costs RM500 thereabouts! WTF. There is no way I am paying that for one project. So we continue to think of how we can build this damn object. At least the electrical part is done and works.

*light bulb moment*

Just as I write this, I’ve figured out how she will build this torch. Can’t believe I never thought of it before. Duh.

Have your kids started learning how electronics work at school? Because I have daughters, I am going to make damn sure that they can fix the electronics at home and fix the plumbing and change a car tyre and fix a computer insides and all the stuff that boys can do. I used to fix phones and TVs, so they better be able to do it. T1 has potential. T2…..errr……she has no interest whatsoever and will just feign her rights to princess-dom.
