How to achieve a great education

I’ve been toying with the idea of allowing T1 to go to school as and when she pleases, with the intention of inculcating some internal discipline and self governance. Now, those are two terms I learnt from the Homeschooling Moms. You might think I’m off the rockers and perhaps I am, but wouldn’t it be great if a child (and eventually adult) does something she wants to rather than because she has to?

Right now, a fair majority of her life is dictated by us, her parents, with choices in between; and really, they aren’t difficult choices. She decides what she wants to eat, where we go, what books she likes, if she feels like giving in to her sister or not……you know, nothing really consequential. And then we have our influence on her, what we think is right for her such as going to school and studying hard, eating healthy and having good manners etc. However, be mindful that these are things we are almost forcing down her throat. You MUST say thank you. You MUST go to school. You MUST eat some vegetables. Wouldn’t it be amazing though when a child DOES eat her vegetables because she really wants to for all the reasons that she knows? Wouldn’t it be great if she says please automatically because she knows the consequence of the practise? Somehow, I feel that when a lesson is taught and instructed, it isn’t so effective and we almost live our ideals through our children. But aren’t they their own individual people with their own paths and karma to follow? Don’t they deserve it?

How do we light up that spark in a child so that she reaches her absolute full potential? When we teach a child lessons, they just listen and take our word as the written truth. But in order to break boundaries, one needs a more inquiring mind. Why am I going to school really? To study hard? And then what? To be a Doctor? And then what? Help lots of people? And then what? What if I hate blood? What if I love music? What if I really, really love the way the earth worm digs a hole into the damp soil? What if I am interested in starting fires?

When you go to school, there is discipline that is forced down upon you. There are rules to follow and everyone follows, whether or not those rules make sense or not. And then you learn things like how not to wear a V neck T-Shirt just in case. You learn by being brainwashed.

Is that really learning?

So whilst I would like T1 to have a conventional school life with friends and interaction every day, I also yearn for us to spend more time together discussing the world at large and giving her this opportunity to question. I would like us to travel more. Children are naturally born genius with boozles of curiousity and ingenuity. We dumb them down. What if we gave them half a chance to soar? Allow them to find their path and reach their goals because it comes from their own internal passions, something that they’ve inculcated by themselves? This is something SO HARD to inculcate when a child goes to school full time! So how?

I contacted the school to test the waters. What if my daughter cuts class here and there just because? They frowned at me in disdain, completely disapproving. I didn’t push further.

There is something here I am trying to achieve but I’m not sure if I am making any sense at all to you. I don’t want to be part of the cattle and do whatever everyone else is doing just because it is the thing to do. That’s what we ALL do. So just do.

I am questioning our education system. I am questioning what makes a brilliant child turn into a brilliant adult? I am trying to work out what would work best for my child. I know of straight A students who are successful doctors or actuaries but their lives are so mediocre. By that I mean, they have hopped onto the conveyor belt and followed the processes as they should, and ended up where they would in that chosen path. But how is that ground breaking? How is that going to change the world or make a big difference? How do we extrapolate the extraordinary from the ordinary? That is what I’m referring to.

Because at the state that this world is moving, let’s not even talk about the world, how about we just keep it local……I sure as hell feel that we need some extraordinary talent(s) to help us move to better places, and these talent(s) need to be sourced from the youth of our country. What say you, hey?
