Aiming High

Everyone has their standards for everything. Some people absolutely love KFC. Some wouldn’t touch it with a nine yard pole. Some offer a great review of a book. Others think it’s crap. Sometimes it’s personal taste, sometimes it’s ignorance. As one grows older and wiser, one becomes more discerning. What would you define as a good movie? Was it merely entertaining??? Did it keep you in suspense??? How much thought really goes into your life whenever you make a decision? Does it even matter? How much does it matter?

For a critical analysis of a movie, let’s say……the American Film Institute suggests these questions to ask when reviewing a movie:

Is the film adapted from fiction or drama, or is it based on an original idea and screenplay?

If it is an adaptation, does it follow the original and neglect the cinematic opportunities of the story?

Or does it sacrifice the original work for unnecessary cinematic devices?

If the story is original, how fresh or innovative is it?

Are the characters believable? Were they appropriately cast?

What is the theme of the film?

Do the plot, acting, and other elements in the film successfully impart the theme to the viewer?

Is the setting/locale appropriate and effective?

Is the cinematography effective?

Does the film make certain use of color, texture, lighting, etc. to enhance the theme, mood, setting?

Is the sound track effective?

Is the music appropriate and functional, or is it inappropriate and obtrusive?

Are camera angles used effectively?

Are they ever used for a particular effect?

Are there special effects (and/or special effects makeup) in the film?

If so, are they essential to the plot? Are they handled skillfully?

Do they serve a necessary function, or does the film sacrifice plot or characterization for the effects themselves?

Does the film make use of symbols or symbolism?

What purpose do the symbols serve?

Are they used effectively?

How does the symbolism in the film contribute to or enhance the film’s overall theme?

As you can see, quite a lot to think about!!! Watching a movie and then relating it’s story in short to someone or somewhere is just a plot review, not a critique of it.

Coming back to life, real life. How do you go about making your day to day decisions? I was taught at University to think in such a way where every single detail is questioned and analysed to perfection. That is architecture for you at The Bartlett. This habit has carried on into real life and I’ve found that it isn’t such a bad habit to have! Of course, there are many things I couldn’t care less about hence won’t waste what little brain cells left for the matter (like trivial and petty squabbles between women, for example) but when it does matter, MAKE IT MATTER.

Interestingly, this logical thought process seems to be rubbing of on my T1. She is also analytical and thinks critically about a lot of things. I think that is a good thing and I will continue to push her with knocks on her ideas. The more practise one gets, the better one gets. One can always be challenged till there is perfection whereby the challenger relents and admits defeat. You now have a perfect product or idea. There is nothing more for me to say or ask about it. I am completely sold.

Where do you stand in everything that you think about?
