Once upon a time, when T1 was a baby and her baby books were starting to fill up our minimalist home, we bought her an IKEA Billy Book Case as it was white, cheap and did the job. We figured we wouldn’t be using it forever and one day, when the kids are all big, off all these kiddy furniture go! Just like kid’s clothes and shoes, yes?
But before T2 was even born, T1 had outgrown her IKEA Billy Book Case. Gah! How many books does a kid need to have???? Loads apparently!!!
So we upgraded to a 5 door IKEA Hemnes Book Cupboard. That’s full now too. What should I do???
Coming back to the Billy Book Case – because T2 was about to arrive, like out of my tummy, and I didn’t have time to organise giving the book case away nor selling it or whatever, I told the Hubs to just dump it into the guest bathroom, the ONLY place else that we had space. And then once it was in the guest bathroom, it naturally got filled up with storage……like Kleenex bum wipes and bottles of toiletries etc. What a sight!
Soon after T2 was born, I had the most brilliant plan. I told the Hubs, “We’re keeping the Billy Book Case in the guest bathroom.” He gave me a look of horror.
I explained my plan in detail and made him go out with me that very night to buy fabric from IKEA. We were going to SEW curtains or drapes or covers or whatever the heck you want to call it, but some nice fabric to cover the ghastly sight that stored my Kleenex bum wipes.
What a fantastic plan!
Whilst T2 was a newborn, I was sat on the dining table cutting out various fabric like a pro, with sewing chalk and sewing ruler and my Mom as sewing advisor.
The brand new sewing machine was out, ready to rock and roll. Incidentally, we were also busy preparing for T1’s 5th Birthday Party and needed the sewing machine. Gosh, reminiscing about that time really brings back fond memories. I remember us staying at the Hotel with a newborn baby…..me stressing like hell about breastfeeding because T2 kept crying for milk and there wasn’t enough milk! Godpa Dave was in town and we had a blast of a time with Godpa Dave.
I digress. Where was I again?
Oh. IKEA Billy Book Case.
Yes, so I sewed my first curtain and velcro-ed it professionally onto the Billy Book Case. I was thrilled.
Three years later, my IKEA Billy Book Case looks like this – with unfinished covers……
That was me pondering long and hard this year if I should ATTEMPT to finish up my sewing job (I still have the fabric all cut to size with velcro ready etc) OR just bloody send the entire thing to the tailor!!!
