The first night that Tee was ill was also the first night I’d come back from the dead and turned into a zombie. It must’ve been because I had slept 24 hours when I was nearing death. The Hubs and Tee were fast in Lala Land by 10pm and there I was tweedling my thumbs. I had promised myself that I will no longer sleep insane hours and hit the sack latest by 1.30am, but my laptop beckoned. So at 1am, my fingers started crawling towards it but my head would pull them back. Then they’d crawl out again and my head would pull them back again. This went on for about 2 hours when I finally gave up because Tee woke up crying. Her fever was 40.2 degrees Celsius.

We gave her some paracetamol which worked like water. Then we sponged her. But her fever wouldn’t budge. It was as stubborn as her!

By 5am, she felt like a hot boiling kettle so we took her in to A&E and thankfully, it was a quiet night. I think everyone had already died. So much comfort for A&E, eh? When the nurse took her temperature, she got a shock and quickly interrupted the Doctor’s slumber. Tee was stripped naked and sponged immediately and she, of course, hated this.

A Tamil opera started in A&E, “I don’t like this!!! I don’t want this!! STOP!!! I said STOP!!! I don’t like this!! IT’S COLD!!! Mommy, it’s too cold!!!!!!! I want you to stop!!! I don’t like this!! WAHHHH!!!! Stop it!!!”

Once that was over, we waited for her to dry, dressed her and got ready to go back home when the Doctor stopped us. “You can’t go home. Her temperature hasn’t dropped yet.”

Oh.

So we waited for 15 minutes. And it still hadn’t dropped.

Half an hour later, it still hadn’t dropped so they gave her a suppository which she also resisted. I suppose not everyone likes their anuses stuffed.

Then we waited again. Did I tell you her fever was as stubborn as her?

Half an hour later, they sponged her again. By this time, the Hubs, me and the Doctor were playing games with our eyelids – Who could keep both eyelids up and open the longest. The Doctor was winning. We asked how long more we had to wait and she said till the fever goes down. Huh?

So I did my Tamil drama act and flung myself down, did a sausage roll across the floor and threw my hands up wailing, “PLEASE!!!! Doctor!!! Let us go!!! I haven’t slept a wink and my limbs are about to drop off!!” All I needed was to wrap the roll of paper towels around myself as a sari to complete the act.

Just then, Tee’s fever had come down to 39.6 so the Doctor made us promise to monitor her fever and released us sometime in the God forsaken hour when the wet market’s were opening. We raced home and crashed.

Two hours later, Tee was awake and ready to start her day.

Aaaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!
