What I love about Malaysia

Whenever I ask the many foreigners that have moved to Malaysia for good why they love it here, the word FOOD usually bungee jumps out of their mouths. The weather comes a close second but FOOD is always a compelling reason to live in this land of the greatest variety of food. Really.

In Malaysia, you can get the food of almost all the world (nevermind their authenticity) but the food that belongs to Malaysia alone, is more than enough to satisfy the majority of food lover’s middles.

This is because….Malaysia is home to Indians, Chinese, Malays (indigenous to Malaysia) and ‘dan lain-lain’ (the rest – comprising Eurasians, Nyonyas and Chindians). And because of this, we already get a world of truly authentic culinaries fit for palatial foodaholics.

It is also through food that the many races come together in Malaysia. Nowhere else in the world do you witness such honest togetherness between the many races at such a grand scale. Ignore the media, they need the news.

Here, Indians and Chinese travel miles to visit the kampungs of Malays during Hari Raya. At Deepavali, the Muslims and Chinese jubilantly join the Indians. During the Chinese New Year, the Malays and Indians celebrate in harmony with the Chinese. At Christmas, the same thing happens. The colour of skin and believe me, we have so many tones from white to black and in between, only adds joyful merriment to any party. It is true Malaysian custom to host an ‘open house’ during the festivities which means that you cook lots and lots of food and have your house OPEN to anyone.

ANYONE.

I, for one, love food as you can tell from my size. And only in Malaysia will I be happy teasing my own palate with the colours and flavours of Malaysian food. Only in Malaysia.

I end this with T garbed in traditional Malay dress, the baju kurung – another thing we Malaysians share, in the blending of races, putting ourselves in our friendly neighbours shoes. With delight.
